The Minister for Employment and Labour Relations Hon Ignatius Baffour Awuah has asked the other members of the Tripartite of the National Labour Commission to support the work of the Commission.
The Members of the Commission of the National Labour Commission led by the Chairman Justice Kwabena Assuman Adu (RTD) have paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations.
The Minister Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah congratulated the Members for the speed with which they started work after their inauguration by the President in July last year. He said this showed their commitment and resilience to work.
He attributed this to the expeditious manner the Commission have resolved a number of labour agitations since they took office. “But for you we wouldn’t have had the individual peace we are having now, if there are any institutions to be commended, the N L C is one of them” he added.
He said considering the regular cases of unfair termination the Commission keeps recording it was only prudent that the Commission intensifies its media education and deduce strategies to reach the working public with the provisions in the Act.
He asked the Commission to work with other ministries to ensure the minimization of labour agitations.
The Minister recommended to the Commission to open regional offices in other regions to help handle labour related complaints there also.
On his part the Chairman of the Commission Justice Kwabena Asuman-Adu Rtd. informed the minister that the visit was to introduce the Members of the Commission to the ministry.
He noted that the Commission since its establishment 17 years ago have received over 5 million cases out of which over 71% of the cases have successfully been resolved.
The most recorded cases have been on unfair termination, with the private sector leading with reported cases he further added.
He made mention that the Education and Health sectors have recorded the highest industrial agitations in the Public Sector over the period.
Justice Asuman-Adu Rtd noted that the challenge we have on hearing many of the cases brought before the Commission is that mostly the representatives of parties to dispute resolutions do not have the mandate to take decisions and it further delays our processes.
In attendance at the meeting was the Executive Secretary Hon. Ofsou Asamoah.
